Setup DynDNS Dynamic DNS on a Linksys WRT54G Router - Part 1

I finally decided to nose dive into the blogging arena. I couldn't find a better time to start writing my first post, the Christmas Holidays. During the festive holidays, or should I say, time-off, I had a relative of mine called me up, yet again, to configure his router for Dynamic DNS. After I couldnt find anything on the information highway, I decided to make this my first article.

Before we get started I'll briefly describe what Dynamic DNS is all about, so here goes.

What Is Dynamic DNS?

Wikipedia has it as - "is a method, protocol, or network service that provides the capability for a networked device using the Internet Protocol Suite, such as an IP router or computer system, to notify a domain name server to change, in real time (ad-hoc), the active DNS configuration of its configured hostnames, addresses or other information stored in DNS."

In simple words - It's a technology which allows you to update your IP address (Public IP Address) automatically with a domain so that anyone on the outside world can still contact you via that domain or sub domain name if you

  • Do not have a Static IP Address - an IP address which is assigned to you by your ISP and never changes.
  • You want to host your own website, blog, email server, security systems etc.

Setting up the Linksys WRT54G Router

Before you get started on the router you will need to first setup a Dynamic DNS account with a provider. There are many free providers out there. The two listed with the Linksys router are (at the time of writing this article)

  • DynDNS.org
  • TZO.com

A few others I've tested are

  • no-ip.com
  • easydns.net

We'll stick with DynDNS.org because they seem to be the most popular and also listed in the Linksys router. Navigate to dyndns.org to setup your account.

Step 1 - Go to dyndns.org and click on the "Create Account" link button.

 dyndns_main

Then fill out the necessary information and click on the "Create Account" button

dyndns_signup

You will then be taken to the "Account Created" page

dyndns_created

You'll then have to login to your email account (which you provided in the signup form) and click on the link to confirm the registration. This kind of secondary verification is normal to confirm that it really is you, trying to create an account and not no bots trying to create fake accounts.

dyndns_confirmation

After you've clicked on the "Confirm Registration" link in the email you'll need to login to your new account at DynDNS.org and setup your account. Head on over to dyndns.org and login to your account. Then click on the "Services" menu item (1) and then click on the "Dynamic DNS" image button (2).

dyndns_login

After clicking on the "Dynamic DNS" image button, you'll be taken to another page, once there, click on the "Get Started" button. You will now see the following page

dyndns_dns

This is where you'll setup your subdomain which will automatically be updated whenever your IP address changes. (1) Enter a hostname of your choice, in my case I used "saifkhan". (2) Select a domain from the dropdown list. There are quite a few. To keep things simple I selected dyndns.org. The hostname will then be appended to the domain name, thus allowing anyone to reach you at yourhostname.dyndns.org, in my case, saifkhan.dyndns.org. (3) Enter your Public IP address. You can also click on the link just below that textbox (4) where it says "Use auto detected IP address xx.xx.xx.xx. (5) Click on the "Create Host" button to save your changes. Thats it! You've now successfully configured your Dynamic Domain Name (or I should say, Dynamic Sub Domain Name). You can now log out of DynDNS website.

Now it's time to configure your Linksys router so that it can update DynDNS with your new public IP address whenever it changes. This will be done on Part 2 of this article which can ge found here.

Hey thank you for that info. I was wondering if You can tell me how to configure my router so I can view my home cameras from my job or whereever I go. I know that i need internet to view it, that I have. I think first I have to configure a name is Dynamic DNS, then configure that name in the DVR box, and then configure DMZ in the router with the default local Ip address? I appreciate all your help

Thanks for reading. Now that you have the internet connection, here is what you need to do. First you have to give the DVR box a static IP on the local network. By default, the DVR box, when plugged into any network will take an IP from the DHCP pool (taken from the router in your case). If you are not sure of the IP which was given via DHCP, then look at the back or bottom of the DVR box for the MAC address, looks like 00:AA:..... and so on. Then log into your router and go to the status page. Look for DHCP clients table and find the entry with that MAC address. Once you have that IP, you can than assign the DVR box by giving it a static IP by opening up your browser and typing that IP (http://192.168.x.x). You should get to the admin section of the DVR box, login into the box and set the IP addresfrom automatic to manual. I am not sure whuch DVR box you are using so I am unable to tell you which screens. If you don't want to go this far, you can leave the dynamic IP.

The next thing you need to know is what port is the DVR box allowing traffic for video streaming on. Once you are armed with the IP address and the port, log into your router and go to the poert forwarding page. This is found under 'Application and Gaming" section on Linksys router. On tthat page, give an app name (anything, like DVR in your case). Then put the same port in "Start" and "End", so if the DVR box is allowing traffic on port 1002, then enter 1002 in "Start" and "End". Set the protocol to "TCP" and put the last digit of the IP address for the DVR box in the "IP Address" section. If the IP address of the DVR is 192.168.1.3 then just enter 3 in the box and then check mark "enable". Click on save settings.

Follow my article in setting up your dynamic IP and that's it! To get to your DVR from outside just navigate to http://myname.dyndns.com:1002

Note: you'll have to put the port number at the end (1002 or what ever port you will use).

Good luck!

Hi Angelo,
Thet's what the article is trying to show you, how to set that dynamic feature under DDNS. Also make sure that you setup the correct "Port Range Forward" in the router. Let me know if you have any additional questions.

Hi Shainan,
Yes, you can still access the DVR if the IP changes. The router will update the IP at DynDNS.

# re: Setup DynDNS Dynamic DNS on a Linksys WRT54G Router - Part 1

great article...i am using Netcomm NB9WMAXX, after setting up the DDNS in the router. I couldn't even connect to the router's config page using its WAN access port which i placed as 885...When I tried to access in the internal network http://sample.domain.com:885, there is no page displayed. There is an IP camera in the network as well where I assigned as port 84, I can accessed it internally using http://sample.domain.com:84 but I couldn't outside the network. There is no firewall where the software of the camera was installed. I don't know what is the issue here. I tried a diff. NB9WMAXX but with static IP on it and I can access it in an outside network. I sent Netcomm an email asking if NB9WMAXX supports DDNS (it is there but it doesn't want to work)

I was able to get everything working properly and I was able to view my cameras remotely. Everything was working fine then I received an email message from dyndns.org saying my hostname and been blocked because it was being updated too frequently. Is there a way, through the router, to disable auto updater. I did not see an option for this.

Thanks

Keep in mind that your Internet Service Provider will allocate the static IP address to your Linksys router permanently after each Internet connection start. You can avoid this by using the Dynamic DNS (DDNS) feature built in your Linksys router. Therefore, you should not acquire a static public IP address. In fact, you’ll need only to create an account at dyndns.org or tzo.com., and then save your account credentials with your domain name in the appropriate area in your Linksys router. thanks for shaing

For some alternate providers you can also try this Free VPN List - some of them have similar setups or easier APIs.

Could you explain how to setup 2 cameras with Linksys router. The router has only one spot for DYNDNS info, how about the second camera. It worked good with the first camera, now I add the second one.
I have two "yourhostname1.dyndns.org" and "yourhostname2.dyndns.org".
Thanks.
